In case you’re not in the know, the IUD (intrauterine device) is a T-shaped flexible plastic wrapped in copper, and inserted inside the uterus to prevent the sperm and egg from meeting each other. Sounds scary? It’s actually very simple! In fact, it’s quickly becoming a popular choice of contraceptive because of its convenience and effectiveness.

IUDs are Highly Effective

The IUD is more than 99% effective, and functions immediately the moment it is inserted inside your uterus. Since it can completely work on its own and does not require you to consistently pop a pill or wear protection before getting into action, chances of failure and human error are virtually impossible.

Copper is a highly effective spermicide. The copper ions being released damage and immobilize the sperm by separating its tail, making it unable to swim and meet the egg.

Cervical mucus is also affected by the presence of copper ions. The mucus that your cervix produces becomes thicker and stickier, to make it tough for the sperm to swim through.

Copper ions also alter the environment inside your uterus. It becomes more hostile, and difficult for the sperm to thrive.

IUDs are Great for Years

The IUD is safe to use for a long time, and can last up to 10 years. It works continuously, and stops only when it has reached expiration, or has been taken out of your uterus. It’s here for a long time, and let’s you have a good time!

Only high-quality and safe materials are used to create IUDs so don’t worry about it “rotting” or deteriorating inside you. Having the IUD inside your uterus is safe to stay for up to 12 years, while its contraceptive efficacy lasts for 10 years.

When your IUD expires and you still want to have one, the doctor will simply replace it with a new IUD.

IUDs are Very Convenient

The entire procedure is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Before the doctor inserts the IUD in your uterus, you will be informed of how it’s done and what to expect once the IUD is in. You can have it inserted anytime during your menstrual cycle, but some would prefer having it inserted during their period, when the cervix is open the most.

It will only take a few minutes for the doctor to insert it, and when it’s done, you’re good to go. After that, you don’t have to worry anymore about taking pills or wearing condoms. It shouldn’t affect your strength and movement, so you can immediately go on with your daily activities and have sex whenever while the IUD does its thing.

The IUD doesn’t need constant readjustment once it’s in. In case you suspect that it has slipped out or been displaced, the best thing to do is take a trip to the doctor and have it checked.

IUDs are Completely Reversible

Easy in, easy out. Having the IUD removed will also only take a few minutes. The IUD is completely reversible, and does not affect your fertility or future pregnancy. You can have it removed if you decide to get pregnant. Once it’s out, your cycle and fertility will return to normal.

Although the IUD is excellent at preventing pregnancy, it can’t protect you from STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). While you have your IUD, you may also want to use an additional form of contraceptive that can protect you from STIs, such as condoms. Safe sex is the best sex, so always use contraceptives properly to protect you and your partner.
