Every woman will experience an itchy cooch at least once in her life. The itching could be in the vagina or vaginal opening, or in the vulvar area. Wherever it is, we all dread it.

The annoying and uncomfortable itch could go away on its own, or it can turn into a huge problem. Either way, it could be hard to determine when it’s time to see an OB-GYN.

The vagina can clean itself and doesn’t require any fancy soap or procedures to keep it clean. It’s the vulva that needs you to keep it clean by running warm water over it and gently patting it dry before wearing clean, fresh underwear. Still, there are things that could affect your vagina’s health, such as hormone changes, stress, and pregnancy, which could also cause the vagina to itch.

Vaginal itching is sometimes a sign of a serious problem. Go see an OB-GYN if you have any of these symptoms along with your vaginal itching:

  • Thick, white discharge that looks like cottage cheese

  • Gray discharge that has a fishy or strong, foul smell

  • Burning sensation in your vagina

  • Red and swollen genitals

  • Pain or tenderness in the genital area

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting when you don’t have your period

  • Urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, burning sensation when urinating, urinary urgency, and urinary incontinence

  • White patches of skin on your genitals

  • Blisters on your genitals

  • Discomfort during sex

  • Pelvic or abdominal pain

Vaginal itching usually shouldn’t cause any panic and doesn’t always require immediate medical attention. But if it’s really bad and doesn’t go away within a few days, it’s best to have an OB-GYN check you.
